The White House is working "24/7" to help feed babies after President Biden invoked the Defense Production Act after the national infant formula shortage, reports Fox News.
The act orders Defense Department aircrafts to pick up formula from overseas to combat the shortage in what they are calling "Operation Fly Formula," the outlet reports. Meanwhile, one Maryland non-profit organization is trying to help out at the local level.
Feed the Fridge is jumping in to help families by spending $5,000 a day on formula and distributing 100,000 bottles at its locations in Prince Georges County, Montgomery County, and DC, reports 7News.
The organization works to provide healthy meals prepared by local restaurants residents struggling with food insecurity. Feed the Fridge operates by placing refrigerators around the DC Metro area and filling them with meals each day.
Amidst the national shortage, the organization announced that it will be adding baby formula to its fridges. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the organization's outdoor fridge was held at the Glassmanor Community Center in Oxon Hill Tuesday, May 17.
Within a few hours, all the formula was gone but it won't stay that way for long, 7News reports. More formula is expected to be distributed in the coming weeks, the outlet reports. Donations to support the Feed the Fridge efforts can be made here.
